PILLAR 2: DISCOVERY

Discovery: We Are Designed to Grow and Learn
I’ll never forget the feeling when I realized that discovery wasn’t just something I pursued—it was woven into who I am, by design. We are designed with a deep, intrinsic drive to learn, grow, and uncover the beauty of the world we inhabit and the galaxies beyond. That realization hit me like a wave of grace: I wasn’t wrong for being curious, for asking questions, or for dreaming of more. I was simply leaning into the way I was made.
When I began to understand that discovery was part of the plan, it felt like a love letter written just for me: “Seek, and you will find.”
Through discovery, I saw the incredible potential of a healed future, one where curiosity wasn’t something to suppress but something to embrace. I began to understand that this drive isn’t a burden—it’s an invitation to live with purpose and joy, to grow in the direction of grace.

The Science of Our Design: Discovery

At the core of discovery is our brain’s incredible drive for learning and growth, hardwired into our reward system. Dopamine is the key player here—it surges when we encounter something new, solve a problem, or pursue a meaningful goal. This neurochemical response motivates us to explore, anticipate, and keep moving forward, reinforcing the joy of discovery.
Our brains are also wired for novelty. The prefrontal cortex and hippocampus work together to process and store new information, while dopamine ensures we stay motivated during the process. This design allows us to adapt, innovate, and thrive in a constantly changing world. Even better, the brain’s neuroplasticity—its ability to form new connections—flourishes when we engage in discovery, whether through learning a new skill or experiencing something for the first time.
This isn’t accidental. Discovery is embedded in our design as a way to grow closer to others, understand the world, and even connect with our purpose. It’s a system designed to awaken curiosity and propel us toward the joy of learning, reflecting the beauty of a master plan for wellbeing.

Alcohol and Its Impact on Discovery
Alcohol disrupts the pillar of discovery by dulling the brain’s natural drive for curiosity, learning, and growth. The brain’s reward system thrives on dopamine spikes that occur when we engage with novelty or make progress toward a goal, but alcohol hijacks this system in several ways:
  • Blunting Curiosity: Alcohol creates artificial dopamine spikes, which over time reduces the brain’s sensitivity to natural sources of reward like learning, problem-solving, or exploring new experiences. As the brain becomes reliant on alcohol for dopamine release, curiosity and excitement about the world fade, leaving life feeling stagnant or uninspired.
  • Impairing Neuroplasticity: Alcohol reduces BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), which is essential for forming new neural pathways. This makes it harder to learn new skills, adapt to challenges, or engage in meaningful discovery.
  • Narrowing Focus: Consistent drinking often shifts the brain’s priorities away from growth and exploration, replacing the joy of discovery with the predictability of alcohol’s effects. Over time, this can leave the brain stuck in a cycle of routine and repetition, making it harder to embrace the wonder and awe that comes with discovery.
Alcohol steals the sense of progress and anticipation that makes discovery feel meaningful. Healing this pillar involves reducing reliance on alcohol and intentionally re-engaging with curiosity and learning, allowing the brain to rebuild its sensitivity to true rewards.

As soon as I made the decision to take naltrexone every time I drank, I unknowingly started the process of healing this pillar. Over time, the changes in my motivation to uncover new ideas and my newfound passion for work were remarkable. So profound, in fact, that this pillar—Discovery—came to exist because I could quite literally feel it strengthening within me.
As my reward system began to heal, I became more curious about the systems involved in motivation and creativity. That curiosity led me to uncover a tremendous truth: Discovery is both a gift and a cure in itself. It is a pathway to growth, renewal, and healing, and it is profoundly impacted by how we care for our reward system.
